It is a male and has a big belly from drinking. They live mainly in Brazil, Argentina,Venezuela, Colombia and Paraguay. Their food consists mainly of fruit, grass, leaves and aquatic plants.
Much of the habitat of the South American tapir is protected area. The species was declared protected in many countries. Yet there is much on the tapir hunt for their meat and skin, that’s why they are threatened with extinction. Therefore, there is a European breeding program for this species, which Artis now contributes.
Today it was announced that last year Artis had a record number of zoo visitors, thanks to the many births that took place.
