Plan once again this year a visit to Amsterdam for the most beautiful Christmas markets and more!!
Christmas in Amsterdam is truly a season of celebration, whether or not you celebrate the day itself in its traditional, religious sense.
If you find yourself in the city this Christmas, the following are a few suggestions to help you pass the time and incorporate a little Dutch culture into your holidays.
Museumplein is turned into a Christmas Square every year, boasting a market and craft-making displays perfect for passing an afternoon. There is also an ice rink which is open well into the evening. Christmas lights have been up since November, and an evening stroll in any direction from the brightly-illuminated tree in Dam Square can prove a pleasant one, especially through the Leidseplein and its surrounding area or towards the Jordaan, which is full of cosy cafes and unique shops. The RedLight District has Christmas lights of its own (not just red ones!) and seems to never shut down.
The main attraction at Winterland Amsterdam is a huge ice rink less than 600m2. This rink is the heart of winter fun on the Rembrandtplein. The ice rink opens daily at 10:00 and the real skating enthusiasts can continue until midnight. (Entrance not yet known) may in sessions of two hours each skate. The track is only accessible with hockey skates or skating. More information click here
If you want something a little less traditional than the typical holiday celebration, head over to the Westergasfabriek complex in the Westerpark neighborhood of Amsterdam. The Winterparade (€ 35) showcases theater, music, dance, film, cartoons and comedy wrapped in a special Christmas package. And all the while you can eat, drink and be very merry at the many nearby restaurants and bars. Winterparade’s last night promises to be quite the New Year’s Eve bash (€ 55). The wintery parade is warmed up by the signing of choirs, spread along the route. Spectacular, fairytale-like, magical, beautiful (light) scenes will pass by on boats, whereas you are admiring the Christmas Canal Parade on the quay. A boats parade which guarantees a beautiful evening, and which will bring you (and your family) in the ultimate Christmas mood.
