Every year since 1975 the Kwakoe Summer Festival is held during some weekends in the summer. It was originally a Surinamese festival, but in recent years it developed to a multicultural festival.
The festival was founded in 1975 as a football tournament, organized by Foundation Youth Centre Kwakoe. It was initially played on the playing fields of SV Bijlmer, the location of the current Bijlmerplein in Amsterdam Southeast. In 1983 the festival moved to its present location in the Bijlmer Park. The festival was for who can not afford to go on holiday, it has since developed into a multicultural festival that focuses on Antilleans and Africans.
This festival really gives you a Caribean feeling, groovy music and good food!
